The South Korean electronics giant today confirmed the upcoming LG V30 will boast the largest aperture on a phone camera, with f/1.6 glass on the primary camera module. That’s good enough to deliver 25 percent more light to the sensor behind it compared to an f/1.8 aperture lens, which the LG G6, the LG V20 — the V30’s predecessor — and the iPhone 7 have.

Prior to the announcement, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the HTC U11 were among the smartphones that set the gold standard for the industry, each bearing an f/1.7 lens. They don’t disappoint in practice either, with the HTC U11 getting the nod from camera-testing website DxOMark as the best camera phone around right now, and Samsung’s Galaxy S8 sitting close behind in the rankings.

Any photographer worth his or her salt will tell you that light is the most important thing to consider when taking photos and video. A wider aperture allows more light to hit the sensor, resulting in brighter shots with greater detail. That is true for any camera, big and small. However, it remains to be seen how good the results are with the LG V30, though there’s definitely reason for optimism.

Besides having an f/1.6 lens, the V30 will include a glass lens, which lets in more light than a traditional smartphone lens made of plastic. Expect better color reproduction as well, according to the press statement. As for the rest of the camera system, the V30 will allegedly sport two rear cameras — possibly one for wide-angle snaps, the other for normal shots.
In any case, we’ll find out soon enough, because the smartphone is set to launch August 31st in Berlin, Germany.
