Vivo has upped its innovation game lately. It opened the year with a bang by showcasing a technology that puts the fingerprint sensor under the screen. That was at the CES trade show in Las Vegas. Now, for the first time, a Vivo smartphone with that feature has been made official in the Philippines, three months after it was launched in China. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the Vivo X21.

It’s the company’s second device with an on-screen fingerprint reader after the Vivo X20 Plus UD. The handset also unlocks by scanning your face using the front-facing camera, similar to recent Vivo releases such as the V7 and its Plus variant.

The unlocking solution used here, plus the absence of physical navigation buttons at the bottom of the display, leads to a front panel with a high screen-to-body ratio of 90.3 percent. A tall aspect ratio of 19:9 and a high, 2,280 x 1,080 resolution makes the Vivo X21 ideal for media consumption. It does have a controversial feature in the notch, where the sensors and front-facing camera are housed.
