After opening preorders earlier this month and revealing Alex Gonzaga as its new brand ambassador, OPPO Philippines has officially taken the wraps off the A9 2020 and A5 2020 midrange smartphones.

(Update, September 28: Should you buy the A9? Read OPPO A9 2020 review: A strong midrange contender.)

The OPPO A9 2020 will be available in Marine Green and Space Purple colors from September 28, and those who participated in the presale will receive a Bluetooth headset worth P2,099 (about $40). The price? A somewhat reasonable P15,990 ($307) given all the phone has to offer.

You’re looking at a 6.5-inch phone with a 720p LCD screen at a cinematic aspect ratio of 20:9; an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 fabricated using an 11nm process; 8GB RAM; a long-lasting 5,000mAh battery that charges via a USB-C port; and dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos enhancement. The Snapdragon 665 is decent enough for most uses and appears in the Realme 5 and Xiaomi Mi A3 as well.

Both the A9 2020 and A5 2020 have a 6.5-inch LCD screen with a 20:9 aspect ratio

The A9 2020 also brings electronic image stabilization to video to minimize camera shake when shooting handheld.

But, no doubt, the most impressive spec on paper is the OPPO A9 2020’s quad-lens setup at the back. The primary camera is equipped with a 48-megapixel sensor for detailed photos and improved low-light performance using pixel-binning technology to basically combine data from four pixels into one. The secondary camera has an 8-megapixel sensor behind an ultra-wide-angle lens, which should come handy when shooting landscapes, interiors, and group shots.

Rounding out the main camera package for the OPPO A9 2020 are two 2-megapixels sensors that allow portrait-style shots with a nicely blurred background. The front sensor for selfies is 16 megapixels.

Portrait mode vs Auto mode

The OPPO A5 2020 uses the same Snapdragon 665 inside the A9 2020 and has a huge 5,000mAh battery and four rear-facing cameras as well. But it also arrives with less RAM and storage (4GB and 128GB) and a 12-megapixel primary shooter. The phone still uses microUSB and not USB-C for data transfer, charging, and reverse charging.

In the Philippines, the A5 2020 will arrive sometime in October.
