OPPO has quietly launched a new A series smartphone in China. The newly announced OPPO A55 5G is now available in the company’s home market and joins the A53 and K7x as one of its most affordable 5G offerings. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet on a global release.
The A55, which uses the model number PEMM00, is now available through online retailers, such as JD and Tmall, with a suggested retail price of ¥1,599, which translates to roughly P11,869 or $247 converted. It is available in black and blue colors.
Like the A53 and K7x, the OPPO A55 is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity chipset that supports dual-mode 5G. This time, the chip used is a Dimensity 700 — the first unit to have it — accompanied by 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage.
The cost-effective Dimensity 700 is fabbed on a 7nm process and includes two Cortex-A76 CPU cores clocked at 2.2GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores. It also has Mali-G57 MC2 graphics, which indicates decent gaming potential. MediaTek announced the Dimensity 700 alongside other products back in November 2020.
The phone also sports a 6.5-inch HD+ screen. However, the refresh rate is 60Hz instead of 90Hz. The battery backup is 5,000mAh, which is not so generous, but more than what some other devices offer in this price range. At least there’s USB-C and an SD card slot for additional storage.
For taking pictures, the OPPO A55 5G is equipped with an 8-megapixel selfie camera and a triple-lens camera with dedicated sensors for macro and portrait shots. The main camera on the back packs 13 megapixels, while the secondary cameras each have a 2-megapixel sensor.
In the Philippines, the cheapest 5G handset from OPPO is the Reno 4 Z 5G, which currently retails at P20,990 ($436). It uses MediaTek’s Dimensity 800 SoC.
