Huawei‘s Mate series is back, two years after the Mate 40 lineup was introduced globally.

(Update, November 1: The Huawei Mate 50 Pro is the new No. 1 camera phone on Dxomark!)

Newly launched in China is the Huawei Mate 50 series, which comprises the Huawei Mate 50 RS Porsche Design, Huawei Mate 50 Pro, Huawei Mate 50, and Huawei Mate 50E. Only the latter, the most affordable of them all, relies on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G 4G chip, but the rest use a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 4G SoC.

The new smartphones are all powered by XMAGE, the imaging brand it launched in July following the news that Huawei already parted ways with German camera and optics manufacturer Leica. Below is the press release Huawei sent us at the time.

The three highest-specced variants of the Huawei Mate 50 series debut Beidou Satellite Message, which gives the phones the ability to still send text and location information even if there’s no signal.

The RS Porsche Design and Pro models have a lot in common, from the 6.74-inch 120Hz OLED display to the 4,700mAh battery that supports up to 66 watts of wired charging and 50 watts of wireless charging. However, the Huawei Mate 50 RS Porsche Design gets a periscope telephoto macro camera to go along with a 50-megapixel main sensor and a 13-megapixel ultrawide lens; more RAM — 12GB, to be exact; and a more premium design. As it should be, as it’s at the top of the pecking order here.

The vanilla Huawei Mate 50 features a bit-smaller, 6.7-inch 90Hz OLED screen; a camera system on the back that’s similar to that of the Pro model; and a smaller battery capacity at 4,360mAh. It lacks a 3D TOF sensor on the front.

The Huawei Mate 50E, on the other hand, shares almost the same specs as the Mate 50, except that it doesn’t have a 12-megapixel telephoto shooter and support for satellite communications — besides using a midrange instead of a flagship processor, of course, as we already mentioned earlier.
