Following the launch of the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro flagship, which is priced from P42,999 (around $785) in the Philippines and debuts the industry’s first retractable portrait camera, Tecno Mobile brought its first-ever foldable smartphone to the Mobile World Congress 2023 trade show in Barcelona, Spain.

(Update, June 7: The TECNO Phantom V Fold has launched alongside the CAMON 20 Pro 5G and 4G models in the Philippines!)

The Tecno Phantom V Fold will aim to put pressure on the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4, Xiaomi MIX Fold 2, and the recently announced HONOR Magic Vs, offering flagship-grade internals and a larger folding display than what the Galaxy Z Fold4 has, to go along with a more palatable price tag.

Priced from $1,099 (about P60,237) for the variant with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, the Phantom V Fold is set to arrive sometime in the second quarter of 2023. It will launch in India first, then in other international markets. For reference, Samsung’s foldable flagship starts at $1,799 in the United States and P98,990 in the Philippines.

To cut down on the price, Tecno has opted for a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 Plus chip instead of its Qualcomm counterpart. If you’re not familiar, it’s the same 4nm platform the ASUS ROG Phone 6D Ultimate uses. It’s also paired with fast LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 3.1 storage, and runs Tecno’s custom overlay on top of Android 13 out of the box.

The cover display measures 6.42 inches across and features FHD+ resolution, while the internal screen is 7.85 inches and is capable of 200,000 folds. Both displays use LTPO AMOLED technology with a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother operation. Open the foldable screen, and you’ll immediately notice the hinge crease is barely visible when looking at it straight on. You can barely feel the crease on the panel, too.

At the back, you get a 50-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel telephoto option with 2x optical zoom, and a 13-megapixel ultrawide shooter. There’s a 16-megapixel cam on the foldable display, as well as a 32-megapixel one for selfies on the outer screen.

For supposed all-day battery life, Tecno has equipped the Phantom V Fold with a 5,000mAh battery that supports 45-watt fast charging. The company advertises a full charge in 55 minutes. Tecno also claims that a short 15-minute charge can fill the battery to 40%. Check out the video preview that we embedded in this article.
