Remember the Peer-to-Peer Transmission Alliance, formerly known as the Inter-Transfer Alliance Group, which was formed by Vivo, Xiaomi, and OPPO to establish a cross-brand platform for sharing files from one device to another?

We finally got to experience their AirDrop-like wireless file-transfer system. And it’s everything we expected it to be: fast — with an average transfer speed of 20MB per second, according to the three companies — and seamless.

Because our OPPO Reno 2 and Redmi K20 Pro (or the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro globally) smartphones are already on Android 10, we tried sending a picture from the Reno to the Redmi. It worked like a charm! Watch the short video below.

How does the cross-brand file-sharing feature work?

It’s easy. The feature must be enabled on your unit and on the recipient’s, and you can then share the file or files you want to send. The other party’s device will receive a notification saying that you’re transmitting something to them. The recipient has the option to accept or reject whatever it is that you’re trying to send.

The function scans devices using Bluetooth Low Energy, which has a broader range and lower power consumption. It then transmits photos, videos, music, documents, and other files using Wi-Fi P2P. The tech is said to be faster than Bluetooth but will not compromise users’ Wi-Fi connectivity. It doesn’t interrupt your Wi-Fi connection as well.

A need for a single file-transfer system

If there’s anything the feature reinforces, it’s that there’s a need for only one system or platform to make file-sharing easier for consumers, no matter what phone brand or operating system we use. This will be helpful, especially in the 5G era, where file sizes are definitely going to be bigger.

But we can only wish. At least Google is working on a file-sharing feature that will bring the same benefits as OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi’s technology.

Which devices can take advantage of the technology now?

As of January 6, 2020? Well, OPPO says OPPO Share is compatible with models running Android 10-based ColorOS 7. In case you didn’t know, ColorOS 7 is currently available as a trial version with the Reno 2, Reno 10x Zoom, F11, F11 Pro, and F11 Pro Marvel’s Avengers Limited Edition.

Is your OPPO handset not on the list? Don’t worry because the manufacturer assures that the release will cover the following series in the coming months: Find, Reno, R, F, A, and K3.

As for Xiaomi, the company states that the Mi Share feature is compatible with devices running MIUI 11 (Android Pie or later), not including the Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro, Redmi 6, Redmi 6A, Redmi 7A, Redmi 7, Redmi S2, Redmi 8, Redmi 8A, Redmi Note 8, and Redmi Note 8T.

Vivo, on the other hand, hasn’t mentioned specific models. It did announce that the said functionality will be available on its devices starting February 2020.
