The first Huawei device with a pop-up camera is now official. Say hello to the newly unveiled Huawei P Smart Z.

The phone was recently listed in stores in Spain and Italy for €279 or roughly P16,306 or $312. Should the tech giant decide to launch it in the Philippines (as the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 perhaps), it will likely retail for much less given the higher prices for imported products in Europe.

It could cost less than the Huawei P30 Lite, which is priced at P16,990 ($325) locally. It might even end up being the most affordable phone with a pop-up camera on the market, retailing for less than the P17,999 ($344) Vivo V15 and P23,999 ($459) Vivo V15 Pro.

Speaking of which, the motorized selfie snapper is 16 megapixels, with an f/2.0 aperture lens. It allows for a tiny top bezel, which incorporates an earpiece speaker. Huawei claims the selfie camera has been tested more than 100,000 times and can withstand 12 kilograms of pressure. Additionally, the company says it only takes a second for the module to emerge from inside the P Smart Z’s body.

Meanwhile, the back of the phone gets a fingerprint sensor and two cameras, though neither shooter actually has auto-focus. The extra camera works as a depth sensor when taking portrait-style pictures with a blurred background.

In terms of design, the Huawei P Smart Z uses a dual-tone color scheme similar to the Huawei Mate 10 Pro and Google Pixel handsets. Moreover, the back itself also seems to feature a glass build with curved sides reminiscent of the company’s recent models in the premium smartphone space. It comes in three color choices — Midnight Black, Sapphire Blue, and Emerald Green.

On the inside, there’s a Kirin 710F processor mated to 4GB RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. The Kirin 710F could be a small upgrade over last year’s Kirin 710, but we don’t know for sure at the moment. We do know it runs EMUI 9 based on Android 9.0 out of the box, though, and that the battery is rated at 4,000mAh for all-day use.
