After teasing the Motorola RAZR 2019 foldable phone earlier, Lenovo Philippines has fired up the rumor mill once again.

This time around, the company has revealed the date of its much-awaited first announcement in years, and at the same time, teased another smartphone that will get a local launch on May 23. The phone in question now could be the Lenovo K5 Play, which seemingly matches the rear design of the phone Lenovo Philippines featured in its teaser with the caption, “Let’s Play.”

Just one of the Lenovo phones that will be launched in the Philippines that day? (Update, May 7, 2020: Lenovo Z5 with P6,990 price tag launching in PH May 23, post suggests)

Hmmm. Okay. Some of you might recall that the Honor Play lookalike K5 Play launched in 2018 in China and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 chipset with up to 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. Like the handset in the image, it also packs a dual-lens camera system consisting of a 13-megapixel primary shooter and a secondary 2-megapixel unit.

In front, the Lenovo K5 Play sports a 5.7-inch LCD with an 8-megapixel selfie camera in its chunky top bezel. Other specs include a fingerprint sensor around the back; a 3,000mAh battery; and Lenovo’s ZUI Android skin on top of Android 8.0 Oreo.

Yes, Oreo — which isn’t surprising considering when the K5 Play was first released. At the time, it was marketed as a gaming-focused device with an entry-level price. Now? We’re not so sure, though we’re fairly certain that the smartphone will be a bargain-basement entry; the base model with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage hit the Chinese market with a price tag of ¥699 (around P5,005 or $99) two years ago.

It should be much cheaper now. Having said that, Lenovo Philippines created a poll earlier today. It read: “How does a smartphone with 3GB RAM + 32GB storage sound for just P3,990 ($80)?” This definitely sounds like it is referring to the Lenovo K5 Play, which is a decent deal at that price.

We believe the company is referring to the Lenovo K5 Play in this poll

Last April 24, Lenovo Philippines made another poll, asking local consumers if they had “seen a smartphone with 6GB RAM at P6,XXX?” Considering this isn’t a reference to the Lenovo K5 Play, we’ll probably see the company announce at least three devices in the Philippines later this month, with what now looks to be the official comeback date of its mobile division.

A different Lenovo smartphone model?

It has already brought some of its tablets to the country, albeit with limited availability because of the ongoing lockdown to limit the spread of the COVID-19 disease.
