Finally, the first 5G-ready Y series phone on our side of the world is official, giving consumers outside China access to one more affordable handset that can connect to the fifth-generation mobile network.

Granted that the Vivo Y72 5G has been launched only in Thailand for now, there’s a big possibility that the device — or at least another model from Vivo‘s bestselling lineup — will become available in other countries, hopefully including the Philippines. It comes with a suggested retail price of ฿9,999 (roughly P15,709 or $323). Not many smartphones from the Y72’s price range are 5G-enabled.

Looking like units from the company’s more premium V and X series, the Vivo Y72 5G is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 700 chip paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The 7nm SoC has two ARM Cortex-A76 big cores operating at a maximum of 2.2GHz in its octa-core CPU and six ARM Cortex-A55 little cores.

Enabling 5G consumes power faster, so it’s great to see the new device pack a 5,000mAh battery. Charging shouldn’t be quite a problem either, as there’s support for 18-watt fast charging via USB-C.

The Vivo Y72 5G likewise features a 64-megapixel main camera assisted by 8-megapixel ultra-wide and 2-megapixel macro ones; a 16-megapixel selfie sensor; a 6.58-inch FHD+ screen; a side-mounted fingerprint reader; and Funtouch OS 11.1 based on Android 11.
