Although Samsung has unveiled the first flagship-grade smartphone of 2022, with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G, we think it’s Realme that has welcomed the new year with a true top-of-the-line contender. Say hello to the Realme GT 2 series.

(Update, March 22: We now have the Realme GT 2 Pro, Narzo 50, and Narzo 50A Prime’s respective prices, discounts, and availability in the Philippines!)

(Update, February 17: Finally, a global launch for the Realme GT 2 series!)

As expected, the brand — which ranks sixth in the global smartphone scene, top five in 21 markets, second in India, and first in the Philippines — pulled no punches in its first flagship offerings of 2022. Confirming previous reports, we are looking at two new models: the Realme GT 2 and the top-shelf Realme GT 2 Pro.

In China, the vanilla Realme GT 2 starts at ¥2,699 (around $425 or P21,769), whereas the base variant of the Realme GT 2 Pro with 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage is priced at ¥3,899 ($614 or P34,747). The 8GB/256GB and 12GB/256GB storage variants of the Pro cost ¥4,199 ($661 or P37,172) and ¥4,499 ($708 and P40,405), respectively. And the highest-specced GT 2 Pro with 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and a whopping 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage retails at ¥4,999 ($787 or P40,440).

Both devices have variants with the same bio-polymer material-based, paper-inspired overall aesthetic designed in another collaboration with renowned Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa, but vary in terms of screen size, chipset, and camera specs. The GT 2 series also introduces optical image stabilization to Realme devices, allowing for better night shots and more stable footage, as well as Realme UI 3.0 based on Android 12.

The standard GT 2 features a 6.62-inch E4 AMOLED LTPO screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1,000Hz touch sampling. For flagship performance, the phone packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G SoC, a 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 primary image sensor with OIS, and a 5,000mAh dual battery that supports up to 65 watts of fast charging.

The high-end Realme GT 2 Pro, on the other hand, is equipped with a slightly larger 6.7-inch E4 AMOLED LTPO adaptive display that can go from 1Hz to 120Hz depending on the application, to help preserve battery life. The screen’s embedded fingerprint reader even supports heart-rate detection.

It also boasts an impressive touch-sampling rate of 1,000Hz and peak brightness of 1,400 nits, to go along with its 2K resolution, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection, and slim bezels. Further, Realme has bagged an A+ rating from DisplayMate, suggesting that the GT 2 Pro’s AMOLED panel ranks among the best in the industry.

Inside, the phone is built around Qualcomm’s latest and fastest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 5G chipset and comes with a 5,000mAh battery that allows for fast charging up to 65 watts, with a claimed charging time of just 33 minutes when starting from zero.

For pictures, the GT 2 Pro has a 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 main image sensor at the back, alongside an ultra-wide shooter with a 50-megapixel sensor and the world’s first 150-degree camera lens and a second-gen 2-megapixel microscope camera similar to that on the OPPO Find X3 Pro. The tertiary camera offers 40x magnification compared to the Find X3 Pro’s 60x microscope camera, but comes with the industry’s first Fish Eye mode for smartphones.

On paper, the Realme GT 2 lineup looks promising indeed, and the aggressive pricing suggests it could be the benchmark for 2022 flagships. Hopefully, Realme’s global announcement will include launch details for the Philippine market. We’ll keep you posted.
