This could be Nokia’s first nearly bezel-less phone

We don’t think of Nokia when talking about smartphones with modern design. But that may just change — soon.

Images of an updated Nokia 6 have shown up on the TENAA website, China’s equivalent of the Philippines’ NTC [National Telecommunications Communication] and the United States’ FCC [Federal Communications Commission]. And the first thing that we immediately noticed is its screen.

Gone are the thick, too-outdated-for-2017 bezels of all the Nokia phones that HMD Global released this year. What we have for the Nokia 6 (2018) is a 5.5-inch display with an 18:9 resolution of 2,160 x 1,080 that takes up almost all of the front area, hence the slim bezels and the placement of the home button on the back of the unit.

It’s about time, really. The feature may have been originally found in premium devices like the Samsung Galaxy S8, but it has found its way to a lot of midrange — and even budget — handsets. The Huawei Nova 2iVivo V7+ and V7, OPPO F5 and F5 Youth, Doogee Mix 2 and Mix, Bluboo S8 and S1, and Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus come to mind.

Inside, the Nokia 6 (2018) is expected to use a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor; the 2017 model is powered by a Snapdragon 430 chip. The 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage listed on TENAA is an odd mix, and may just be one of the variants. There should still be support for two SIM cards as well.

Word has it that the smartphone will be launched along with the Nokia 9 flagship device in January. At launch, the 2017 Nokia 6 went on sale in the Philippines for P11,990 ($238), so the 2018 version may be aggressively priced as well.
