A newly announced Galaxy has taken the Galaxy A51 5G‘s place as Samsung‘s most affordable 5G phone yet.

(Update, November 22: The Samsung Galaxy A42 5G is coming to the Philippines, the company’s site indicates!)

The Samsung Galaxy A42 5G, which debuted at the Korean technology giant’s Life Unstoppable event, is priced at €369 (around P21,254 or $437) in Germany and will be available there in November. By comparison, the A51 5G costs from $499.99 (P24,284).

Other markets’ Samsung units have not revealed how much the handset will cost once it lands in their respective countries — if it will ever be sold outside Europe in the first place. If it does, just take note that Europeans have their consumer-electronic goods heavily taxed, so the Samsung Galaxy A42 5G will most likely be cheaper in other regions.

The suggested retail price is still not close to that of the current titleholder of the world’s cheapest 5G smartphone, the newly launched Realme V3 5G, which is retailing from ¥999 (P7,110 or $147). Then again, Samsung positions itself as a more premium brand.

According to the company, the Galaxy A42 5G boasts a 6.6-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-U display with an under-screen fingerprint sensor, a 5,000mAh battery with support for fast charging, and a 48-megapixel main rear camera assisted by an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, a 5-megapixel macro sensor, and a 5-megapixel depth-sensing camera. It’s available in black, white, and gray color variants.

Other specs have not been revealed yet, but word has it that the Samsung Galaxy A42 5G is powered by an 8nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 octa-core processor paired with up to 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage. Rumors say the device features a 20-megapixel selfie camera, and One UI version based on Android 10.

In the Philippines, Globe Telecom and Smart Communications have started rolling out their respective 5G networks. We’ve already tested them many times (see examples here and here), and all we can say is it’s something we’re excited about.
