Three OPPO Reno 5 5G phones were launched in China in December, with an Reno 5 Lite model said to be joining them soon.

(Update: The OPPO Reno 5 is launching in the Philippines!)

Outside the Chinese market, we finally have one smartphone from the series. The OPPO Reno 5 4G has been launched in Vietnam with a price tag of ₫8,690,000 (around P17,905 or $372 converted). There’s no word yet on when it’s going to be available in other countries, but expect it to be soon. We’re still hoping that the Philippines will get a 5G variant; the only other affordable OPPO handset here that supports the fifth-generation mobile network is the Reno 4 Z 5G.

So how does this 4G version compare with the OPPO Reno 4 that was released globally last year? Because at first glance, their design doesn’t differ that much. There must be something to look forward to for people to consider buying the Reno 5 instead of its predecessor.

Well, for one, the main sensor of the quad-camera setup on the back is already 64 megapixels, up from 48 megapixels. Instead of a 32-megapixel selfie shooter, the OPPO Reno 5 4G now has a 44-megapixel one.

The two OPPO devices feature a similarly sized AMOLED screen, but the new model boasts a 90Hz refresh rate, not 60Hz, and a single punch hole. The battery is bigger at 4,300mAh (versus 4,015mAh), and it already supports 50 watts — not just 30 watts — of fast charging. The Reno 5 4G comes with ColorOS 11 layered with Android 11 out of the box, too, so goodbye, Android 10-based ColorOS 7.2.

We can’t wait to get our hands on the recently launched OPPO unit, but we also can’t deny that we’d love to review the 5G-ready variant more.
