Apple iPhone 12 series specs and features

The American tech giant typically announces its latest iPhone lineup in September, but it looks like the Apple iPhone 12 series will be worth the wait. We’re particularly optimistic about the Mini given the lack of extremely comfortable yet capable devices in the premium segment.

The iPhone 12 has a 6.1-inch screen size; the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max have 6.1- and 6.7-inch screens, respectively; and the iPhone 12 Mini is impressively small, coming in at 5.4 inches.

All iPhone 12 models share the same processor — Apple’s 5nm hexa-core A14 Bionic chipset — so they should offer similar performance. The A14 is the first chip fabricated on TSMC’s latest 5nm process, beating flagship Android competition (this year at least) that use 7nm chips. Apple quotes 40% and 30% CPU and GPU improvement, respectively, but those numbers are based on a comparison between the A14 and A12, instead of last year’s A13.

Regardless, all iPhone 12 units support 5G (nationwide on Verizon’s network) in the U.S. It remains to be seen whether the new series will support 5G in other markets, including the Philippines, but we’re confident it will. The devices are also compatible with millimeter-wave 5G for better speed and coverage.

Boldly enough, neither comes with standard chargers and earphones in the retail box. Yes, your new iPhone 12 won’t come with a power brick and a pair of buds for private listening. The good news is that Apple’s decision not to include wired accessories in the box will reduce its annual carbon footprint by the equivalent of 450,000 cars.

It will support both accessories still, but Apple has revived its MagSafe branding this year to introduce wireless charging to its smartphones. Apple’s new MagSafe connection supports up to 15 watts of wireless charging.

The Apple iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and iPhone 12 Mini share a Super Retina XDR custom OLED and sport a more impact-resistant sheet of Ceramic Shield glass on top, which is made of ceramic substrate, making it harder to break. Apple claims Ceramic Shield provides up to four times drop protection versus regular iPhone glass. Additionally, the company says the Super Retina XDR screen on the iPhone 12 boasts a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and packs 460 pixels per inch.

Like in previous years, camera performance is a big talking point this year, especially on the Pro models. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini have dual cameras with a dedicated ultra-wide-angle camera for landscapes and group shots.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max include three cameras, including dedicated lenses for ultra wide and telephoto. The Pro units also have a LiDAR scanner for AR gaming and AR shopping. Apple likewise uses LiDAR for improved focusing and portrait shots in low light.

In terms of native camera modes, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max adds RAW capture support, as well as HDR video recording with Dolby Vision compatibility out of the box. The key difference between the regular Pro and Pro Max is that the latter features a larger main camera sensor that can take in more light.
